A brand new family owned guiding business has launched near Killarney, Ontario. Edge Adventures, run by Duane, Marian & Hailey Sonntag, are no strangers to the outdoors community, or camping in general. With over 22 years in winter camping experience, their expertise couldn’t come at a better time. The recent pandemic has opened the eyes to many Ontarians to venture outdoors and enjoy nature. Ordinarily Winter is a time where people are staying indoors, but Winter Camping is definitely an appealing way to get people to enjoy the typically dormant season.

“We are excited to announce our learn to winter camp work shops and guided winter camping experiences. After years of helping people learn to winter camp and expanding the winter camping community we feel like we have knowledge and experience to help people get out and love winter, that it’s not something to be endured. This is a natural next step for us especially since we have been fortunate to acquire 70 acres to explore, play and snowshoe around just outside of Killarney, a dark sky preserve and at the foothills the LaCloche mountains.”

They are kicking off the Winter with an online workshop Winter Camping for Beginners this Saturday, December 12th and are following it up with guided Winter workshops in January. Online workshops are being offered virtually, with a live discussion and question & answer period. They will cover topics like…

  • hot tenting & cold tenting

  • how to use wood stove

  • sleep systems for staying warm

  • meal planning

  • gear selection

  • winter safety

  • and more

The in-person workshops are running out of the family’s off grid basecamp in Killarney, Ontario for small group sizes where attendees have the opportunity to stay in a hot tent for the weekend (With on-site assistance and guidance every step of the way). In-person workshops will cover all the same topics as the online ones with the chance to test out some skills. These in person workshops give people the chance to not only develop and build confidence in their winter camping skills but also to see if they like hot tenting before investing in expensive equipment.

Edge Adventures has included several ladies-only weekends and at the same time they are encouraging families to take this opportunity to explore our beautiful province when they might not have otherwise. For those looking for a guided relaxing trip less focused on skill building there are guided winter camping experiences. Centered on enjoying the local trails like “The Crack” while having a warm hot tent and meal to come back to each evening.

By request Edge Adventures are able to book Algonquin workshops.

“We look forward to an exciting winter season and introducing more people to the wonderful snowy world of winter camping. Check us out for the first virtual and interactive learn to winter camp boot camp happening in just a few days with limited spots to kick off the winter camping season in the right direction.”
