Trail Mix: The Outdoors Are Literally Out Doors

Ages ago I was asked to be a guest speaker at a local provincial park and we could present on absolutely anything as long as it adhered to the theme of ‘nature’. I weaved together a presentation that showed nature could be found at every step from the deepest portage all the way back home, including right inside your house. I think it went over well… but I personally enjoyed the tongue-in-cheek part where I showed the infestation of ladybugs in my bathroom as being proof of nature existing right under our roof.
I was immediately brought back my loose analogy when watching the latest campaign kick-offs by Merrell and The North Face. Oddly they both released them within days of each other both featuring similar themes (is this another one of those circumstances when competing movie studios released ant themed movies within six weeks of each other in 1998 (Pixar’s A Bug’s Life, and DreamWorks’ Antz)?
The common thread with both of these videos is that they depict the ‘outdoors’ (which we commonly think of as being remote) as existing the moment you step outside. While we always strive to encourage more people to enjoy the outdoors, it is a toned down version than what we’re accustomed to.
Trail Mix is an assortment of outdoors related blog posts that can be fun, quirky or just thought provoking.
