Manitoba Parks Looks To Improve Backcountry Campsites & Canoe Routes

People came out in droves to visit Manitoba Parks once they re-opened due to COVID-19 on May 4th. The Caddy Lakes area of Whiteshell Provincial Park was a very popular destination this Summer with the dozen of backcountry campsites being booked solid. Most of the canoe routes and backcountry campsites were created back in the 70’s and 80’s but little has been done by the province since then.

The Province of Manitoba is now working on a new trails strategy which will include looking at new backcountry campsites, trails and maintaining infrastructure. While we won’t hear of the results until 2021, the backcountry infrastructure of central and northern Manitoba will be focused on. Bear-proof storage boxes, backcountry toilets and picnic tables are amongst some of the improvements that will be considered. The backcountry campsite reservation system (which is already being used for paddling routes in Nopiming Provincial Park) may also be expanded as well.
