Avenza Merges With Blue Marble Geographics

Canadian based Avenza has announced that they are merging with U.S. based Blue Marble Geographics (Hallowell, Maine) and will operate under a single unified brand, Blue Marble Geographics.

“The combined organization brings together complementary geospatial technologies that connect high performance spatial analysis in the office with reliable execution in the field. Global Mapper® and Geographic Calculator® from Blue Marble Geographics, together with Avenza Maps® from Avenza Systems, support a connected geospatial workflow that spans LiDAR and photogrammetric point cloud processing, high precision coordinate and file transformation, and mobile data distribution and collection, providing accuracy and performance across complex environments.”

Blue Marble Geographics supports a global community of professionals across industries including AEC, energy and natural resources, and defense and public sector, where precise spatial data is critical in complex environments.

While Avenza has yet to enforce the custom map limitation they imposed a few weeks ago, they have shared that they “will no longer be expanding the Map Store and will not be accepting new publishers”. This signals a significant shift how the app will be utilized in the future leading to it being geared to far bigger industries than the outdoors community. Blue Marble Geographics says that there is “no immediate changes” coming for the pricing of Avenza, but I believe that’s the end of the line for backcountry enthusiasts to use the app.
