Hap Wilson Releases The 3rd Edition Of "Temagami - A Wilderness Paradise"

Artist, author and canoeist Hap Wilson has released the 3rd Edition of his fantastic guidebook, Temagami – A Wilderness Paradise.

This 2023 edition clearly details 25 of the best canoeing, kayaking and hiking routes in Temagami, Ontario and contains notes on the region’s history, geography, archaeology, flora and fauna, as well as important outfitting, camping and safety tips. There are 135 two-color maps, 15 pen-and-ink illustrations, and 40 black-and-white photographs that bring this 160 page book to life.

The Temagami Canoeing guidebook this year turns 47. After 12 printings it’s still the go-to guide for canoeing in Temagami, and the resource base for all those new large-scale maps you see on the market. I travelled all these routes from 1970 to 1976 until I was hired as a cartographer/technician/ranger by the OMNR to map out a 10,000 square km area known as the Temagami Wilderness. In 1977 I paddled over 3,000 km working on a precise inventory with the main emphasis on waterway protection, and the protection of the 5,000 year-old “nastawgan” indigenous canoe trails. The first two printings, over 5,000 copies sold out quickly and was published by the government. I took over the publication shortly after and the book went through several reprints and updates. I am happy that this book made a positive impression and in some way helped to protect this unique and precious area. There are also many other individuals who acted selflessly within the environment and FN communities that made a difference.

The new book is truly a “collectors” book with a lot of time put in to make it more than just a canoeing guidebook. I’d like to thank all those who have supported my work over the decades.
