Is Canoeing Better Now Than In The 1980’s?

Cliff Jacobson has given a thoughtful retrospective on his blog comparing canoeing during the 1980’s to present day. I sure enjoy both, but enjoy current day canoeing more probably due to lighter materials. What do you think?
