After the 'Historic' flood of 2013, the Government of Alberta first concentrated on restoring people back to their communities. Now, after actively working on flood mitigation, they will now focus on fixing the recreational areas. The “Backcountry Trail Flood Rehabilitation Program” will include 10 million dollars in funds to repair the trails, with a goal completion of March 31st, 2017.

“It's also important to remember that our backcountry trail system is not only enjoyed by Albertans, but by people from around the world. Alberta is a world-class travel destination and we want to make sure it continues to be so.”

The program area includes South Saskatchewan, Red Deer and North Saskatchewan regions. The zones being addressed first (beginning in 2014 and hopefully restored by March 31st, 2017) will be…

  • The Castle
  • The Cataract
  • The Ghost
  • Kananaskis
  • McClean
  • Upper Clear Water
