Doors Open started in France, back in 1984 to introduce people to the heritage of old buildings. Trails Open is an extension of the idea to show the beauty of the natural trails that may have gone unnoticed.

Trails Open has 23 trails (and growing) across Ontario taking part in the eighth year of of the festivities. Learn more about trail heritage, education, stewardship and a healthier lifestyle during May through October. Visit their website to find an event near you.

Update: May 9th, 2014 - We chatted with Dhria from the London Heritage Council as to why London has so many events. While other Ontario cities have one or two Trails Open events, London has 15!

They have been working on this project for quite some time and felt that they wanted to give it the attention that it deserved. Rather than include it with other stops on Doors Open day, where people might not have a chance to see all the event locations, they are giving London's trails centre stage on Trails Open day (June 14th & 15th).

While many of the locations celebrate natural heritage, they have also included a few environmentally focused organizations and healthy lifestyles stops that promote the Green movement. This Trails Open event also falls on the same day as Fanshawe Outdoor Day (June 14, 7 am to 4 pm), where you can experience hiking, canoeing, camping demonstrations and more at Fanshawe Conservation Area.
